Understanding NZ Work Time
& Logbook Rules

LogBooka automatically enforces all NZTA Work Time and Logbooks 2007 regulations. Here's how we keep your drivers safe and your business compliant.

The Three Core Rules

NZTA Work Time and Logbooks 2007 has three main requirements

1

5.5-Hour Break Rule

5.5h Work
30min Break

The Rule: After 5.5 hours of work time, drivers must take a break of at least 30 minutes.

How LogBooka Helps:

  • Tracks work time automatically
  • Sends reminder at 5 hours (30 min warning)
  • Alerts when 5.5 hours reached
  • Records break duration
2

13-Hour Daily Limit

11h worked
13h max

The Rule: Maximum 13 hours of work time in a Continuous Work Day (CWD).

How LogBooka Helps:

  • Calculates CWD automatically
  • Shows hours remaining in real-time
  • Warns when approaching limit (at 11 hours)
  • Prevents logging work after 13 hours
3

70-Hour Cumulative Period

Mon

Thu

Fri

Sat

Sun

68 hours / 70 max

The Rule: Maximum 70 hours of work time before a 24-hour rest period is required.

How LogBooka Helps:

  • Tracks cumulative work time across days
  • Calculates when rest period needed
  • Enforces 24-hour continuous rest
  • Resets counter after rest period

Other Requirements

Logbook Records

Must record all duty status changes including location, time, and vehicle details. LogBooka captures this automatically with GPS verification.

10-Hour Rest

Minimum 10 hours continuous rest between Continuous Work Days. LogBooka enforces this before allowing new CWD.

6-Year Retention

Employment law requires keeping work time records for 6 years. LogBooka stores and backs up all records automatically.

NZTA Inspections

Records must be available for NZTA inspection. LogBooka generates audit-ready reports instantly.

Alternative Fatigue Management System (AFMS)

More flexible work time options for approved operators

AFMS allows transport operators to apply for alternative work time rules that better suit their operations, while maintaining safety through enhanced fatigue management practices.

What is AFMS?

An AFMS is an NZTA-approved alternative to standard work time rules. It allows operators to customise work and rest periods based on their specific operational needs, provided they can demonstrate equivalent or better fatigue management.

AFMS Requirements

  • NZTA approval required before implementation
  • Documented fatigue management processes
  • Driver training and consultation
  • Regular monitoring and auditing
  • Incident reporting and review

Common AFMS Variations

  • Extended work periods with compensating rest
  • Split breaks and rest periods
  • Modified cumulative work limits
  • Tailored rules for specific routes or operations

LogBooka AFMS Support

LogBooka can be configured to track and enforce your approved AFMS rules. We work with you to implement your specific requirements, ensuring accurate tracking and compliance reporting.

Note: AFMS configuration requires NZTA approval documentation. Contact us to discuss your AFMS needs.
